I’m writing to tell you I am going to Maribor this Tuesday for St. Martin’s Day Celebrations. I’m going to take the train that leaves Postojna at 11:50 and Victor is meeting me at the railway station in Maribor. We aren’t going to buy anything there, but we really look forward to the food and wine tasting. Give me a ring if you want to join us.

Auxiliary Verbs ‘Will’, ‘Shall’, ‘May’ and ‘Might’

The verbs will, shall, may, and might cannot be the main (full) verbs alone. They are used as auxiliary verbs only, and always need a main verb to follow.

WILL and SHALL

Both forms can be used after the subject I or we.
Example:

We will/shall tell him as soon as we see him.         

The negative forms are will not (won’t),
Example:

He won’t know where to go.
and shall not (shan’t).

Example:

We shan’t leave until the party’s over.           

Shall sounds more formal and is less common in modern English, but it is commonly used when making a suggestion.
Example:

Shall we give him the present now?

            
MIGHT and MAY

Might and may are used to talk about the possibility in the future.
Example:

It may snow tomorrow. (Perhaps it will snow.)
We might go to the States this summer. (It is possible we will go to the States.)

P: Er,. . . I kind of hoped for the three of us to go alone. A guy’s night out, just like in the old days.
J: Oh, I see. She won’t mind me joining you in the afternoon, but she may say I shouldn’t come home too late.
P: Great! Better something than nothing. Shall I send her a bunch of flowers with a thank you note?
J: Haha, very funny. You’ll see how it is, once you get serious with someone. So, see you on Tuesday, then?
P: Tuesday it is. Bye!
